OCEAN LITERACY

About Ocean Literacy

The Baltic Sea is an ecosystem facing unique challenges. The intensity of usage by multiple actors from the shipping industry to energy, combined with nutrient run-off from agriculture and phenomena such as exacerbated algal blooms make a “healthy Baltic Sea for all” a very demanding task.

And yet, the Baltic Sea region is also home to some of the best-established and intensive international cooperation at the scientific, civil and even political level. Its burgeoning blue bioeconomy needs a big push from the consumer awareness and demand side.

Our aim is to capitalise on the tradition of exchange and to bring Ocean Literacy more into focus at the Baltic level, making the most of all the existing grassroots initiatives that are already reaching out locally. Our immediate aim is to operationalise the next phase of the EU4Ocean coalition in the Baltic. This means engaging with our stakeholders on the current state of OL in the BSR and focusing on challenges that are particular to our sea basin, as well as identifying concrete actions to address these.

Flagship project "School to work"

According to Eurostat in 2020 the proportion of young NEETs between the ages of 20 and 34 was 17,6 percent on average in the EU as a whole.Young adults not in education or training and without a job is a vulnerable group in our societies. This group is often referred to as NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

“Youth Guidance Centres”, providing multiple welfare services gathered under one roof have proved to be a successful model when organizing an effective answer to this societal and individual challenge.

In the framework of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) and its policy action process School to Work (S2W) it has been decided to define a new profession as coordinator and develop and test an education on Baltic Sea Region basis.

This education consists of four modules and there are two main target groups:

  • Those already working as Coordinators of Youth Guidance Centres charged with responsibilities to manage the centre and with the strategic responsibility to further develop the centre including funding and engaging stakeholders.
  • Those charged with responsibility to initiate and launch Youth Guidance Centres, assumed to hold positions as Head of Unit in municipalities.
