On January 17th, the workshop of Brazil ocean multi-use case study was held to present its key findings. The event happened in person at the headquarters of the Pirajubaé Marine Extractive Reserve (PMER) in Florianópolis, southern Brazil. With a total of 8 participants, the workshop was attended by some of the main stakeholders of the case study area, such as members of research, conservation, and local development organizations.
The workshop aimed to present and discuss the results of the interviews, and the pathway in the development of community-based tourism within fisheries and natural conservation areas. The main focus of the discussion were the challenges and enabling conditions to make the tourist activity effective within PMER. In specific, participants extensively discussed the key challenges encountered:
- The low number of visitors,
- Lack of Infrastructure - small boats dock areas,
- Licenses for tourism operation.
The open discussion between participants lead to the understanding of the interdependent relationship between the 3 challenges mentioned above. The lack of infrastructure was indicated as the main challenge in promoting tourism within the PMER.
A second part of the workshop focused on the possible actions to improve the infrastructure. Participants’ main contribution involved the indication of the need for coordination with the municipality, which is responsible for maintaining and expanding the coastal infrastructure. At the end, the participants were content with the results, showing interest to use them in plan future actions in their organizations.
