The Interreg BSR small-scale project “Blue Green Bio Lab Across the Baltic Sea Region” examines the potential for the use of green and blue biomasses in bio-industrial symbioses.
Is it possible at once – to improve water quality, reduce GHG emissions and provide attractive business opportunities? A Blue Green Bio Lab project partners from Denmark, Sweden and Latvia think that it is, with a help of bio-industrial symbioses and are going to investigate a potential of symbiotic systems. At the centre of such system lays a production of blue (algae, mussels, reed) or green biomass (grass), providing options for further circular production. Involved regions of Skive, Lysekil and Zemgale are each interested in types of biomass specific for the region, and the project’s goal is to develop a toolkit for supporting establishment of bio-industrial symbiosis. The first step of the project is to identify the region-specific biomasses and assess the potential of each type of biomass for further use. Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (SM member) is the project partner responsible for this task. Later stages in the project involve identification of biomass for industrial symbiosis and extensive cooperation with stakeholders from the regions on concept development for symbiosis system. A 3D tool for presenting the concept will be developed and used in steering of stakeholder discussions.
